I am enthralled by Victorian, Gothic, old, beautiful, ugly, and interesting architecture. When I walked to school as a young person it was down a tree-lined avenue, with the trees in their different seasons casting fleeting shadows onto the buildings.
The Light and shadows became the inspiration for ALL my art, for both my drawings and my paintings. I aimed to capture Light. That was my main focus in portraying light on formal stone buildings, and the prevalent Victorian brick terrace houses.
With increased experience of seeing many more different types of buildings, my passion increased to painting and drawing architecture. For many years I concentrated on a solitary building, or a small view, but after being in Newcastle people began to inhabit my streets. This shy person had found a sense of Community. I worked from brick terraced houses to a Georgian doorway, an Afro Caribbean brightly coloured Center, looking down into tall London houses with their gardens and trees. The trees softened the silhouette of the buildings with their fleeting shadows and organic shapes. The shadows created an atmosphere, and I had a sense of the inter-relatedness of all.
